Globalização e regionalismo: guia de estudos Facamp Model United Nations 2014

Autor: Patrícia Nogueira Rinaldi , Roberta Silva Machado

*36:00:00* The clock activates so suddenly in my mind, my head involuntarily jerks a bit to the side. The fog vanishes, dissipated in an instant as though it never was. Memories come slotting into place, their edges sharp enough to leave furrows, and suddenly I know. I know exactly who I am. My name is Lia Johansen, and I was named for a prisoner of war. She lived in the Tiersten Internment Colony for two years, and when they negotiated the return of the prisoners, I was given her memories and sent back in her place. And I am a genetically engineered human bomb. Lia Johansen was created for only one purpose: to slip onto the strategically placed New Sol Space Station and explode. But her mission goes to hell when her clock malfunctions, freezing her countdown with just two minutes to go. With no Plan B, no memories of her past, and no identity besides a name stolen from a dead POW, Lia has no idea what to do next. Her life gets even more complicated when she meets Michael Sorenson, the real Lia’s childhood best friend. Drawn to Michael and his family against her better judgment, Lia starts learning what it means to live and love, and to be human. It is only when her countdown...

Maia

Maia

Autor: Richard Manichello

Número de Páginas: 464

She was electrifying. She possessed astonishing charisma, charm, character, and poise. People would scream, and men withered in the heat of her unspeakable sex appeal as if she were some torrid female rock star. Eager fans threw flowers and gifts to her when she skated. They went absolutely ballistic. Nearly two decades later, she still creates frenzy. She's an international icon now, a planetary celebrity, playing Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and like Cher and Madonna and Sting or Celine, she needs only one name, Maia, on the world's star roster. One in the audience tonight at Caesars tells Maia's story in more detail. He knows the story of her subjugation in the Soviet Sports Gulag, her suffering and callous abuse by KGB watchdogs, and her triumphant rise to fame as a wealthy American superstar. In the time of the Cold War, he and Maia chanced to dream of a shining life in the free world together. She got the life. He was left with the dream. In fall of 1983, Soviet fighter jets have just shot down a commercial 747 carrying 269 passengers and crew over the Sea of Japan. Everyone has perished. KAL 007 is suddenly another international incident, and the US and the USSR are at it...

Fado

Fado

Autor: Philip Brebner

Número de Páginas: 40

Fado, a word meaning fate or destiny, refers to a type of music that embodies the Portuguese spirit of yearning.Told by a mysterious narrator, Fado is a novelette that spans one year, a year marked by religious and pagan festivals, political holidays and the seasons. At the heart of the tale are two characters, Maria Salvador, a Fado singer from Lisbon, and from Porto, Joaquim Oliveira, a veteran of the Colonial War in Mozambique, who suffers from PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder. Drawn together by the Douro valley and an English port wine shipper, their separate stories are a haunting song, the two tales resembling the counterpoint of the two guitars that accompany the singer. It is a song of Portugal, of love and war, rich and poor, superstition and religion, of exile and emigration, of death and injustice, and of course, fate. It is a story that weaves into a tragic climax as the narrator tries to solve the puzzle: why did Maria Salvador stop singing?

Nova

Nova

Autor: Christopher James

Número de Páginas: 296

A distant three-planet star system, having been protected by a dense asteroid field since the beginning of time, suddenly suffers a catastrophic nova. Slowly but surely, the searingly bright sun begins to burn all life from the three worlds. But there is no escape as a decadent empire, having failed to conquer the republic in an earlier war, continues to besiege the system. In desperation, a brave captain leads his crew to the very heart of the empire on a mission of peace, seeking to negotiate passage for his people out of their system. As Monolit's star builds towards a supernova, what will become of the billions of lives of the republic? Why does the empire still seek to dominate these peaceful people? Why has the sun, which is worshiped by the Monolitians as a god, chosen to smite his children now? With an array of characters, including the captain, an admiral, a priest, a spy, a senator, and a magister, Nova is a story of a clash of cultures, climate change, politics, love, murder and religion.

Cria

Autor: Suzanne Rock

Número de Páginas: 164

From the NYT and USA Today bestselling author of the Kyron Pack series comes a story about how shifters living in the Amazon rainforest defend their home from developers and find love in the process. Note: This is a stand-alone novel set in the Jungle Heat world. Deep in the heart of the Amazon Jungle, an ancient breeding race begins… Ever since she was jilted by her lover, Aleta had been subjected to humiliation by her Jaguarundi tribe. Not anymore. She is determined to emerge from her final Cria unmated, and finally be free of tribal traditions and her overbearing father. Aleta has plans -- bigger plans than her father’s desire to see her marked by some oafish warrior in an outdated breeding competition. After the Cria she’ll move to the city and start fresh, leaving her clan -- and her broken heart -- behind. Unfortunately, the past is unwilling to let her go. Forced to abandon Aleta when he went into exile, Luiz knows that this Cria will be his last chance to reclaim what is rightfully his. When a surprise encounter doesn’t go exactly as planned, he realizes it will take more than a little seduction for Aleta to forgive the sins of the past. The race is on, and the...

Iracema

Iracema

Autor: José De Alencar

Número de Páginas: 180

Jose de Alencar's prose-poem Iracema, first published in 1865, is a classic of Brazilian literature--perhaps the most widely-known piece of fiction within Brazil, and the most widely-read of Alencar;s many works. Set in the sixteenth century, it is an extremely romantic portrayal of a doomed live between a Portuguese soldier and an Indian maiden. Iracema reflects the gingerly way that mid-nineteenth century Brazil dealt with race mixture and multicultural experience. Precisely because of its nineteenth-century romanticism, Iracema strongly contributed to a Brazilian sense of nationhood--contemporary Brazilian writers and literary critics still cite it as a foundation for their own work.
