Let's Make Some Noise

Autor: Clarence Bernard Henry

Número de Páginas: 247

Clarence Bernard Henry's book is a culmination of several years of field research on sacred and secular influences of àsé, the West African Yoruba concept that spread to Brazil and throughout the African Diaspora. Àsé is imagined as power and creative energy bestowed upon human beings by ancestral spirits acting as guardians. In Brazil, the West African Yoruba concept of àsé is known as axé and has been reinvented, transmitted, and nurtured in Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion that is practiced in Salvador, Bahia. The author examines how the concepts of axé and Candomblé religion have been appropriated and reinvented in Brazilian popular music and culture. Featuring interviews with practitioners and local musicians, the book explains how many Brazilian popular music styles such as samba, bossa nova, samba-reggae, ijexá, and axé have musical and stylistic elements that stem from Afro-Brazilian religion. The book also discusses how young Afro-Brazilians combine Candomblé religious music with African American music such as blues, jazz, gospel, soul, funk, and rap. Henry argues for the importance of axé as a unifying force tying together the secular and sacred...

Minha doce obsessão

Autor: Renata Sarmento

Ele a quebra. Ela o desafia.

A straight-talking, uplifting and inspiring guide to living a better life and becoming a better human being - through compassion, tolerance, acceptance and love - from one our very best, most authentic and genuine people, the Reverend Bill Crews. He's been named one of Australia's 100 most influential people, yet he's often considered a thorn in the side of his own church. He's a fierce campaigner against poker machine gambling yet it was the proceeds of a horse race that first established his soup kitchen that now feeds thousands across the city. His Sunday-night radio show is the most widely listened to across the nation, but he often makes the news himself. He is a 75-year-old minister and regularly inspires news article headlines that read: 'What if we were all like Bill Crews?' He is the epitome of compassion and often controversial. He is Bill Crews, the charismatic shepherd of Ashfield in Sydney's inner-west. Bill has spent his entire adult life in the service of others, giving a voice to the truly voiceless, be they prostitutes on the streets of Sydney's Kings Cross, refugees fleeing ISIS in a shanty-town camp in Northern France, or Korean women abused during WWII. Bill...

Obsession

Autor: Wenqing Kang

Número de Páginas: 212

This is the most serious study to date on the topic of male same-sex relations in China during the early twentieth century, illuminating male same-sex relations in many sites language, translated sexological writings, literary works, tabloid newspapers, and opera. Documenting how nationalism and colonial modernity reconfigured Chinese discourses on sex between men in the early twentieth century, Wenqing Kang has amassed a wealth of material previously overlooked by scholars, such as the entertainment news and opinion pieces related to same-sex relations published in the tabloid press. He sheds new light on several puzzles, such as the process whereby sex between men became increasingly stigmatized in China between the 1910s and 1940s, and shows that the rich vocabulary and concepts that existed for male-male relations in premodern China continued to be used by journalists and writers throughout the Republican era, creating the conditions for receiving Western sexology.
