Ce livre offre l’édition critique d’un procès vénitien pour hérésie au XVIe siècle, inédit jusqu’à présent. L'accusée était une jeune noble dame demeurant à Portogruaro, une petite ville du Nord-Est de la République de Venise; elle s’appelait Isabella da Passano et était mariée avec le feudataire Marco della Frattina. Son procès fut confié au Sant’Uffizio de Venise. Isabella demeura en procès pendant deux années, et ne fut délivrée qu'en 1570. Son procès est très intéressant pour plusieurs motifs: il est long et intégralement conservé, l’accusée est exceptionnellement une femme; cette femme est très instruite et compte quelques dissidents religieux parmi ses proches; un avocat renommé, dont le plaidoyer est publié dans ce livre, se chargea de sa défense. De plus, les procès-verbaux sont une mine d’informations sur la vie quotidienne, les rapports sociaux, les croyances religieuses dans une localité des terres vénitiennes durant le XVIe siècle.

This volume of essays is meant as a tribute to Alistair Crombie by some of those who have studied with him. The occasion of its publication is his seven tieth birthday - 4 November 1985. Its contents are a reflection - or so it is hoped - of his own interests, and they indicate at the same time his influence on subjects he has pursued for some forty years. Born in Brisbane, Australia, Alistair Cameron Crombie took a first degree in zoology at the University of Melbourne in 1938, after which he moved to Je sus College, Cambridge. There he took a doctorate in the same subject (with a dissertation on population dynamics - foreshadowing a later interest in the history of Darwinism) in 1942. By this time he had taken up a research position with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Cambridge Zoological La boratory, a position he left in 1946, when he moved to a lectureship in the his tory and philosophy of science at University College, London. Can an Animal Commit a Crime? This pioneering work collects an amazing assemblage of court cases in which animals have been named as defendants--chickens, rats, field mice, bees, gnats, and (in 34 recorded instances) pigs, among others-- providing insight into such modern issues as animal rights, capital punishment, and social and criminal theory. Evans suggests an intriguing distinction between trials of specific animals or particular crimes, such as the "murder" of an infant by a pig, and trials for larger, catastrophic events, such as plagues and infestations. In the latter case, Evans suggests a parallel to witchcraft. Edward Payson Evans [1831-1917], a historian, linguist and associate of Ralph Waldo Emerson, taught at the University of Michigan before moving to Germany, where he became a specialist in Oriental languages and German literature. A prolific author, his other Animal-related books are Animal Symbolism in Art and Literature and Animal Symbolism in Ecclesiastical Architecture, both published in 1887. CONTENTS Introduction 1.
