Tourists and Tourism

Tourists and Tourism

Autor: Simone Abram , Don Macleod , Jackie D. Waldren

Número de Páginas: 198

The fact that tourism is a major global industry forecast to continue its dramatic growth well into the twenty-first century is often cited as a rationale for its analysis. However, while the connection between individual locations and the world's global markets is an obvious product of tourism, the heart of the tourist experience is the construction of identity: the relation of the traveller to resident populations; the participants' views of themselves and others; tourists' search for authenticity and their testing of boundaries. This book significantly furthers current debates on tourism by asking important and vexing questions about the nature of the tourist experience: 'folk museums' that forget many of the 'folk' who live in the areas represented; the environments and events that are shaped to meet the 'imagined dreams' of tourist spectators; the categorization of visitors and returnees who take up residence and participate in the construction of 'local' identities; the evolving meanings associated with indigenous culture, tradition, heritage, representation, reality and authenticity. In renegotiating the definitions of tourism for the new millennium, this book represents a...

Kinship, Cosmology and Support

Kinship, Cosmology and Support

Autor: Ruijing Wang

Número de Páginas: 258

Despite living in a state that honours science and debases `superstition', and despite making substantial use of the multiple medical resources available to them, Akha villagers in Yunnan still put their greatest trust for health and wellbeing into healing rituals, especially when it comes to their children. The book delves into these apparent contradictions. What is this Akha way of childcare that continues in twenty-first-century China? It is generally believed that children fall sick from soul loss or attack by spirits. Accordingly, parents frequently invite ritual experts to perform sacrificial rituals for the diagnosis and healing of their children. Relatives (kin and affines), big men, ancestors and spirits all play indispensable roles in these protective rituals. As the process of a healing ritual unfolds, a network of social organisation, kinship, and cosmology is woven.

Managing and Adapting to Global Change in Tourism Places

Managing and Adapting to Global Change in Tourism Places

Autor: Alan A. Lew

Número de Páginas: 257

Today, more than ever, communities need to develop resilience strategies to adapt to the varied and often unpredictable forces of global change. The focus of this collection of articles from Tourism Geographies is on global change in tourism places. Global change incorporates social and economic globalization, which is arguably the most important process to have shaped the development of modern tourism since the nineteenth century, and climate change, which is likely to be the most significant factor influencing human behavior and livelihood in the coming decades. The organization of these articles reflects a traditional geography approach, which starts with an emphasis the physical geography foundations of the human condition, especially through the issue of climate change. This is then broadened by a series of insightful comparative studies of how tourism communities react, adapt and relate to their changing natural and social conditions. This collection of papers addresses major issues and adaptive paths for tourism destinations as they face the challenges of our contemporary world. This bookw as published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting

Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting

Autor: Chelsea Foxwell

Número de Páginas: 296

The Western discovery of Japanese paintings at nineteenth-century world’s fairs and export shops catapulted Japanese art to new levels of international popularity. With that popularity, however, came criticism, as Western writers began to lament a perceived end to pure Japanese art and a rise in westernized cultural hybrids. The Japanese response: nihonga, a traditional style of painting that reframed existing techniques to distinguish them from Western artistic conventions. Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting explores the visual characteristics and social functions of nihonga and traces its relationship to the past, its viewers, and emerging notions of the modern Japanese state. Chelsea Foxwell sheds light on interlinked trends in Japanese nationalist discourse, government art policy, American and European commentary on Japanese art, and the demands of export. The seminal artist Kano Hogai (1828–88) is one telling example: originally a painter for the shogun, his art eventually evolved into novel, eerie images meant to satisfy both Japanese and Western audiences. Rather than simply absorbing Western approaches, nihonga as practiced by Hogai and others broke with pre-Meiji...

Democratization and Identity

Democratization and Identity

Autor: Susan J. Henders

Número de Páginas: 282

The notable contributors to Democratization and Identity introduce the experiences of East and Southeast Asia into the study of democratization in ethnically (including religiously) diverse societies. This collection suggests that the risk of ethnicized conflict, exclusion, or hierarchy during democratization depends in large part on the nature of the ethnic identities and relations constituted during authoritarian rule. This volume's theoretical breakthroughs and its country case studies shed light on the prospects for ethnically inclusive and non-hierarchical democratization across East and Southeast Asia and beyond.

Religions of China in Practice

Religions of China in Practice

Autor: Donald S. Lopez, Jr.

Número de Páginas: 515

This third volume of Princeton Readings in Religions demonstrates that the "three religions" of China--Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (with a fourth, folk religion, sometimes added)--are not mutually exclusive: they overlap and interact with each other in a rich variety of ways. The volume also illustrates some of the many interactions between Han culture and the cultures designated by the current government as "minorities." Selections from minority cultures here, for instance, are the folktale of Ny Dan the Manchu Shamaness and a funeral chant of the Yi nationality collected by local researchers in the early 1980s. Each of the forty unusual selections, from ancient oracle bones to stirring accounts of mystic visions, is preceded by a substantial introduction. As with the other volumes, most of the selections here have never been translated before. Stephen Teiser provides a general introduction in which the major themes and categories of the religions of China are analyzed. The book represents an attempt to move from one conception of the "Chinese spirit" to a picture of many spirits, including a Laozi who acquires magical powers and eventually ascends to heaven in broad...

Television Aesthetics and Style

Television Aesthetics and Style

Autor: Steven Peacock , Jason Jacobs

Número de Páginas: 348

The question of how television operates on a stylistic level has been critically underexplored, despite being fundamental to our viewing experience. This significant new work redresses a vital gap in Television Studies by engaging with the stylistic dynamics of TV; exploring the aesthetic properties and values of both the medium and particular types of output (specific programmes); and raising important questions about the way we judge television as both cultural artifact and art form. Television Aesthetics and Style provides a unique and vital intervention in the field, raising key questions about television's artistic properties and possibilities. Through a series of case-studies by internationally renowned scholars, the collection takes a radical step forward in understanding TV's stylistic achievements.

Planning for Ethnic Tourism

Planning for Ethnic Tourism

Autor: Li Yang , Geoffrey Wall

Número de Páginas: 324

Ethnic tourism has emerged as a means that is employed by many countries to facilitate economic and cultural development and to assist in the preservation of ethnic heritage. However, while ethnic tourism has the potential to bring economic and social benefits it can also significantly impact traditional cultures, ways of life and the sense of identity of ethnic groups. There is growing concern in many places about how to balance the use of ethnicity as a tourist attraction with the protection of minority cultures and the promotion of ethnic pride. Despite the fact that a substantial literature is devoted to the impacts of ethnic tourism, little research has been done on how to plan ethnic tourism attractions or to manage community impacts of tourism. This book addresses the need for more research on planning for ethnic tourism by exploring the status and enhancement of planning strategies for ethnic tourism development. The book develops the case of a well-known ethnic tourist destination in China -Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. It analyzes how ethnic tourism has been planned and developed at the study site and examines associated socio-cultural and planning issues. The authors evaluate...

Compliance Ethnography

Compliance Ethnography

Autor: Yunmei Wu

Número de Páginas: 279

This book explores how small businesses respond to the law. By detailing the intricate ways in which businesses come to comply with or violate legal regulations, it shows a very different picture of compliance that completely changes the way we think about how businesses respond to the law, how we can capture such responses, and what explains their behaviors. The book moves us beyond a static and single-perspective approach to compliance, where firms are seen as obeying or breaking a specific rule at a specific point in time. Instead, it offers a dynamic view of compliance as it manifests in daily business, where firms must comply with a host of legal rules and must do so over a long period of time. This timely book is especially valuable to three main groups: to compliance practitioners and regulatory enforcement agents, who are increasingly forced to consider how compliance management and enforcement practices actually affect compliance; to regulatory governance scholars (in public administration, law, sociology, and management science), for whom compliance is a central aspect; and to scholars of Chinese law, who realize that compliance is a central challenge that the Chinese...

Personal Styles in Greek Sculpture

Personal Styles in Greek Sculpture

Autor: Όλγα Παλαγιά , J. J. Pollitt , Department Of Classics, Yale University Staff

Número de Páginas: 252

The aim of this 1996 book is to identify and evaluate the distinctive styles of five important ancient Greek sculptors whose work is discussed by ancient writers. Its underlying assumption is that the history of Greek sculpture was not simply governed by impersonal, evolutionary forces but that, like the sculpture of later periods, it was shaped by the intuitions, predilections and innovations of particular individuals. The international group of authors whose essays appear here recognize that the problematical and fragmentary nature of the surviving evidence makes their task a difficult one. Nevertheless, by drawing upon the evidence of recent archaeological finds and by re-evaluating both the ancient literary sources and earlier scholarly literature, they expand our understanding of the role of personal styles in ancient Greek art.
