Le genre comme objet de recherche ne participe pas du domaine des objets consacrés et légitimes de la recherche en sciences sociales dans la plupart des pays d'Afrique noire. Ce qui est mis en relief, dans cet ouvrage, c'est l'absence relative d'intérêt des hommes, chercheurs en sciences sociales, pour une réflexion sur le genre. La biographie sociale du sexe peut être comprise comme une entreprise de mise en échec de la violence symbolique constitutive de la domination masculine.
