Lumumba as a symbol of decolonisation and as an icon in the arts It is no coincidence that a historical figure such as Patrice Emery Lumumba, independent Congo’s first prime minister, who was killed in 1961, has lived in the realm of the cultural imaginary and occupied an afterlife in the arts. After all, his project remained unfinished and his corpse unburied. The figure of Lumumba has been imagined through painting, photography, cinema, poetry, literature, theatre, music, sculpture, fashion, cartoons and stamps, and also through historiography and in public space. This collection explores the notion of reframing as a framework for better understanding the multi-agent and multi-level nature of the translation process, generating new conversations in current debates on translational agency, authority, and power. The volume puts forward reframing as an alternative metaphor to traditional conceptualizations and descriptions of translation, which often position the process in such terms as transformation, reproduction, transposition, and transfer. Chapters in the book reflect on the translator figure as a central agent in actively moving a translated text to a new context, and the translation process as shaped by different forces and subjectivities when translational agency comes into play. The book brings together cross-disciplinary perspectives for viewing translation through the lens of agents, drawing on a wide range of examples across geographic settings, historical eras, and language pairs. The great Brazilian writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908) published five of his nine novels as feuilletons in daily newspapers or fortnightly women's magazines. How were the structure and themes of those novels entangled with this serial-publication form? In da Silva's important new study, textual scholarship, critical theory and the history of the book are combined in order to trace this relationship. The most important case study is an extended consideration of Philosopher or Dog? (1891), the novel after which he abandoned the feuilleton. Through a comparison of the serial and book versions of Philosopher or Dog? and a thorough study of the periodical in which it appeared, the international women's magazine The Season , da Silva analyses the changes which the genre novel was undergoing at the end of the nineteenth century: the decline of the serial, and the standardisation of female press. Foi professor, empregado bancário e chefe de Importaçoes e Exportaçoes, em Moçambique, onde casou e viveu quase vinte anos. Na London Guildhal University, em ligaçao com a La Universidad de Alcalá de Henares cursou Psicologia e Línguas Modernas. O concurso Pixel (de pequenas histórias lgbt) foi pensado para acontecer no universo dos blogues, na imensa minoria da dita blogayesfera, e já contou com duas edições que decorreram no blogue de que sou autor. O objetivo não foi procurar escritores, mas histórias, fossem elas verídicas ou imaginadas, e contadas das mais variadas formas (prosa, poesia, vídeo, imagens, sons...). A primeira edição do concurso foi dedicada ao tema Good friends are hard to find (título de uma música de Ed Harcourt, que também dá o nome ao meu blogue), por ser um tema que nos é sempre muito caro, e porque no âmago da blogosfera está a procura de amigos, em especial daqueles mais difíceis de encontrar. A segunda edição do Pixel teve como mote Aquele abraço (mais uma vez título de uma música, de Gilberto Gil), porque a blogosfera é também um grande abraço que nos une a todos, incluindo os que estão do lado de lá do Atlântico. The theme of Medea in Portuguese literature has mainly given rise to the writing of new plays on the subject. The central episode in the Portuguese rewritings in the last two centuries is the one that takes place in Corinth, i.e., the break between Medea and Jason, on the one hand, and Medea’s killing of their children in retaliation, on the other. Besides the complex play of feelings that provides this episode with very real human emotions, gender was a key issue in determining the interest that this story elicited in a society in search of social renovation, after profound political transformations – during the transition between dictatorship and democracy which happened in 1974 – that generated instability and established a requirement to find alternative rules of social intercourse in the path towards a new Portugal.
Portrayals of Antigone in Portugal gathers a collection of essays on the Portuguese drama rewritings of this Theban myth produced in the 20th and 21st centuries. For each of the cases analysed, the Portuguese historical, political and cultural context is described. This perspective is expanded through a dialogue with coeval European events. As concerns Portugal, this results principally in political and feminist approaches to the texts. Since the importation of the Sophoclean model is often indirect, the volume includes comparisons with intermediate sources, namely French (Cocteau, Anouilh) and Spanish (María Zambrano), which were extremely influential on the many and diversified versions written in Portugal during this period.
This book includes 21 chapters dedicated to the study of contemporary, Portuguese and Brazilian poets influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition. It integrates the international bibliography on reception studies in an Ibero-American context. However, the comparison between poets from the two countries highlights the cultural community that, despite the differences, unites them. Travels, routes, and adventures, taken in a linear or symbolic sense, are the common trace of all contributions. The variety of tastes, the greater or smaller closeness to the ancient models, and the authors’ preferences contribute to an overall view of the classical imprint on contemporary poetry as a specific area of literature.

In this history of the black peasants of Amazonia, Oscar de la Torre focuses on the experience of African-descended people navigating the transition from slavery to freedom. He draws on social and environmental history to connect them intimately to the natural landscape and to Indigenous peoples. Relying on this world as a repository for traditions, discourses, and strategies that they retrieved especially in moments of conflict, Afro-Brazilians fought for autonomous communities and developed a vibrant ethnic identity that supported their struggles over labor, land, and citizenship. Prior to abolition, enslaved and escaped blacks found in the tropical forest a source for tools, weapons, and trade — but it was also a cultural storehouse within which they shaped their stories and records of confrontations with slaveowners and state authorities. After abolition, the black peasants' knowledge of local environments continued to be key to their aspirations, allowing them to maintain relationships with powerful patrons and to participate in the protest cycle that led Getúlio Vargas to the presidency of Brazil in 1930.
